Inspiration behind the Painting

Allie Whelan’s acrylic painting Harborough at Night II captures the enchanting atmosphere of Church Street after dark. The scene is bathed in the deepest shades of night-sky blue, creating a rich backdrop that accentuates the warmth emanating from the softly lit windows of the town’s independent boutique shops. Their inviting glow spills onto the street, highlighting the character and charm of this well-loved corner of the town.

At the heart of the composition, the Kings Head pub stands as a beacon of warmth and community spirit. Its golden lights and welcoming façade draw the eye, providing a striking contrast to the cool night tones that envelop the rest of the street. Allie’s expressive brushwork and thoughtful use of colour beautifully capture the interplay between shadow and light, evoking the quiet buzz of an evening stroll through the town centre.

The painting’s atmospheric quality invites viewers to experience Church Street at night, where historic buildings meet the lively hum of local life. Church Street at Night is part of Allie’s series celebrating her hometown, reflecting both the beauty of Market Harborough’s architecture and the warmth of its thriving community.

Here are some things you might like to think about before getting in touch:

Subject Matter: Allie can capture any subject matter; your favourite pet, family members, your home, business, town, village, church or school, or favourite holiday scene, your garden or happiest memory. Give some thought to what you would like included in the painting, and what the focus of the piece needs to be for you.

Timings: Ideally Allie will need a few weeks to complete a commission but please be clear about a deadline if the painting is for a special event, and she will try to accommodate.

Size and shape: Consider where the painting will hang (if you know). How large is the space, would a square or rectangular painting fit well? And would a mounted and framed piece suit the décor better than a canvas or wooden panel? Framing can be arranged for paintings on paper, canvas and wooden panels so the choice really is a matter of personal preference.

Who is the painting for? Consider your / the recipient’s style and preferences; is a bold and modern style more appropriate, or representational/traditional, or is there a favourite colour for a background for example?
