Inspiration Behind the Artwork

Celebrate the timeless charm of local shopping with ‘Frank Gilbert’s’, a captivating acrylic painting by Market Harborough artist Allie Whelan. This 30cm x 30cm piece (44cm x 44cm mounted and framed) showcases the iconic Frank Gilbert’s, a family-run treasure trove of kitchenware, hardware, china, crockery, and utility supplies.

Frank Gilbert’s is a true institution on the Market Harborough high street, known for its wide-ranging stock and unrivaled customer service. Whether you’re searching for an everyday utensil or a long-lost piece of kitchenware, owner Jim’s encyclopedic knowledge of his inventory never fails to amaze. With an uncanny ability to locate even the most obscure item, Jim has built a loyal following of customers who appreciate the personal touch and expertise that sets Frank Gilbert’s apart.

Allie’s painting captures the essence of this beloved local business, from its welcoming storefront to the sense of discovery awaiting inside. Using bold brushstrokes and rich colours, Allie brings the shop to life, highlighting its nostalgic charm and enduring appeal. The artwork celebrates not only the store itself but also the unique experience of browsing a well-stocked, independently run shop where service is personal, and every corner holds a surprise.

This piece is part of a series encouraging Harborough residents to support local businesses instead of turning to impersonal online shopping. ‘Frank Gilbert’s’ serves as a heartfelt reminder of the value of family-run retailers and their role in preserving the character of our community.

Whether displayed in your kitchen, dining area, or workspace, this artwork by Allie Whelan is a tribute to the spirit of shopping local and a celebration of a truly iconic Market Harborough institution.

CONTACT ALLIE

Here are some things you might like to think about before getting in touch:

Subject Matter: Allie can capture any subject matter; your favourite pet, family members, your home, business, town, village, church or school, or favourite holiday scene, your garden or happiest memory. Give some thought to what you would like included in the painting, and what the focus of the piece needs to be for you.

Timings: Ideally Allie will need a few weeks to complete a commission but please be clear about a deadline if the painting is for a special event, and she will try to accommodate.

Size and shape: Consider where the painting will hang (if you know). How large is the space, would a square or rectangular painting fit well? And would a mounted and framed piece suit the décor better than a canvas or wooden panel? Framing can be arranged for paintings on paper, canvas and wooden panels so the choice really is a matter of personal preference.

Who is the painting for? Consider your / the recipient’s style and preferences; is a bold and modern style more appropriate, or representational/traditional, or is there a favourite colour for a background for example? View Allie’s work across the website to take influence and direction if helpful.
